April 2014 President's Message

President's Message
by Lisa M. Bluestein, Esq.

Thank you! These simple words mean so much, and I want to say thank you to all of our members who renewed for the 2013-2014 membership year. The strength and growth of the WWBA is because of members’ on-going commitment to the WWBA mission statement and to each other.  As we are all volunteers, it is even more rewarding to be the President of an association of attorneys and jurists who want to be involved in the betterment of our profession and society in general, and devote a lot of time and effort in order to do so.  The world, the legal community, and this organization are continually evolving, and it is exciting to see where we are going.

In that vein, I am very pleased to announce the slate of WWBA Officers and Directors for 2014-2015. Members vote on this slate at our General Membership Meeting on April 10.  Notice of the WWBA slate can be found on page 8 of this newsletter. The 2014-2015 year will be a fantastic one with all of these wonderful Officers and Directors. WWBA members will also be voting for the slate of WBASNY Officers at the General Membership Meeting.

However, we will not just be voting on slates at the General Membership Meeting. Our April General Membership Meeting is one not to be missed.  It has been a few years and it is time once again for our program featuring the local Federal Judges. This year’s program entitled “View from the Federal Bench: Meet the White Plains Judges,” will start with a social at noon, followed by a luncheon program. The event will take place at Graziellas’s Restaurant in White Plains. See the calendar in this newsletter or the WWBA website for further details. This event is a great networking opportunity and is always sold out, so make sure you sign up early!

The WWBA and the WWBA Foundation once again participated in the rewarding “Read Across America” at School 23 in Yonkers on February 28.  National “Read Across America” day is an initiative to celebrate and promote reading that was originally developed by the National Education Association in 1998.  It is celebrated on or around March 2, which is Dr. Seuss author Theodor Geisel’s birthday.  This year I had the pleasure of reading to Ms. Schmidt’s third grade class and I read a portion of Beverly Cleary’s book “Ramona Quimby, Age 8,” a story about a girl starting third grade.  Other WWBA members who attended and read to the children were Hon. Janet DiFiore, Susan D. Edwards, Jacqueline Hattar, Stephanie Melowsky, Julie P. Passman, Kim Berg, Lonya A. Gilbert and Lucia Chiocchio.  We all had a great time with the kids, and the always gracious faculty and staff of School 23.

As a reminder, the WWBA membership year runs from June 1 to May 31.  Although it seems that we just finished the renewal process, you will be receiving your first renewal notice in June.  Please help the WWBA keep its mailing and overall costs low by renewing after receipt of the first renewal notice.  You should also consider becoming a sustaining member.  Your commitment to the WWBA as a sustaining member is recognized in our Annual Dinner Journal, Directory, and on our website.  Your membership in the WWBA automatically makes you a member of our parent organization, WBASNY, and eligible for all of the statewide and local benefits of both of these organizations.

Once again, thank you for being a member of the Westchester Women’s Bar Association!
